This June, Superman - Man of Steel will finally be showing!!!

Have you ever thought about what you would do if you had the powers of a Man of Steel for one week? I’d prolly be testing how indestructible I was for the first day! Getting that ability is something quite unbelievable and a curious thing. Afterwards, I’d do my best to help people around and prevent bad things from happening. Speaking of Superman’s ability, have you ever wondered how he shaves? I mean, he has the ability of Man of Steel! He probably uses Schick though. They are one of the leading brands of shavers that uses the highest quality blades. Schick. Free Your Skin, just as Clark Kent frees his skin from stubbles. ;p Really, men are way more attractive when they are shaved and have a clean look.

By the way, want free tickets to the new Man of Steel movie? Hurry and join Schick’s Superman promo contest by buying any Superman-marked razor packs! Know more by clicking the poster below. Good luck!

Haagen-Dazs left our country recently so I was surprised to find hat my friend had a pint of Haagen-Dazs in his freezer. I asked him where he bought it and he said Landmark. So there you have it, you can still enjoy their ice cream!

Nothing really beats the creamy smooth feel of Haagen-Dazs. Especially in this summer heat.

Century Tsukiji

Since both the boyfriend and I were busy last Valentine’s Day, we decided to celebrate the weekend after. He brought me to Tsukiji - Century Park Hotel’s famed Japanese restaurant. The place was elegant with high ceilings and neatly arranged chairs, as what you would expect from a Hotel’s restaurant.

I wasn’t able to get the prices of course since this was a Valentine’s date and it would be rude.

Banana Iced Tea. This was the only place where I found this. I am a lover of plantain fruits but I didn’t like this very much. I found it too sweet and too strong.

Watermelon Shake. A refreshing drink.

California Maki. These big rolls needed 2 mouthfuls to be consumed. It’s actually good and the ingredients are fresh.

Kani Tempura. I really don’t like kani being tempura, but my boyfriend loves it.

Ebi Tempura. One of the best tempura I’ve ever tasted, The batter was perfect, crunchy.

Gyoza. Again, one of the best gyoza I’ve tasted.

Beef Fried Rice. Flavorful and the beef was very tender. I think its wagyu quality.

Wagyu Steak. Who doesn’t love wagyu steak on a sizzling plate? It’s so tender and flavorful. ♥

Buttered Scallops. I love scallops! Always have. You can taste the ocean in these. A squirt of lemon makes it divine.

Sukiyaki. Again, wagyu beef. It was raining wagyu’s left and right in this dinner. Sadly, I find the soup a bit too salty.

By the end of the night, I gained about 5 lbs from all the eating, Not to mention that this lucky little girl had a wagyu-filled dinner. This dinner wasn’t just about food though, it was about celebrating the love between the two people and the years that we’ve been together. I’m beginning to sound like an old married person. Truth is, the love between two people should be celebrated everyday instead of just one day in a year. It shouldn’t be celebrated in a day of extravagance but in little acts of love everyday.

Century Tsukiji
Century Park Hotel
599 P. Ocampo St. Malate, Manila, Philippines

Ramen Cool

I got to try Ramen Cool on one of my catch-up dates with friends. The place looks decent from the store front but you’ll get surprised with the interiors when you step inside. As usual, I forgot to take pictures of the interiors. The interiors were very nice. I liked the paintings of Geishas, Sakura and Mt. Fuji on the walls. There were also parts of the restaurant wherein it was divided into cubicles. This gives you a more private feel which I like since a lot of people eavesdrop on dinner conversations.

Beef Ramen (Php 215). The noodles were soft and doesn’t really taste like ramen noodles. The broth was strong and flavorful but salty. The beef used were sukiyaki slices which made it very tender.

Spicy Alaskan Duo (Php 195). Spicy Alaskan is one of my favorite maki rolls. I find theirs to be good. The spiciness was just right, though I wish the fish would’ve been more fresh.

Tofu Special (Php 170). This is one of my favorite among their menu items. It is spicy, salty, sweet and savory at the same time. The tofu also gave a good crunch. Definitely a must order.

Tonkatsu (Php 145). Their tonkatsu was surprisingly very good. Near that of what you get in Little Tokyo in Makati.

Gyoza (Php 115). This was good tasting though I wish the crunch stayed.

Over all, Ramen Cool would be a great place to go to for good food. It has a great value for money and a nice ambiance. Their service isn’t bad either.

Ramen Cool
25 East Capitol Drive
Brgy. Kapitolyo, Pasig City

Tea Kitchen

This is such a late post. I’ve been swamped with exams the past few months so I forgot to publish this post. So sorry about that…

During the holidays (Christmas), I finally got to visit a new milk tea joint in San Juan. Walking in, the ambiance was bright and cheerful. It feels like a place for afternoon chats.

Tea Kitchen also sells tea leaves in different flavors. It’s kind of interesting because of the wide range they have and also because of the deviation from the green, black, jasmine, etc. flavors that we often see.

We didn’t know what to order because their menu items were very similar.

Red Berry Tea with Apple Bits (left, Hot-Php80, 16oz-Php80, 20oz-Php90). It is essentially a sweet red iced tea with apple chunks. They have an option for a sweetness level though, I wish I chose a lower level.

Rooibos Pudding Frost (right, 16oz-Php90, 20oz-Php100). I find this overly sweet. The tea was good but the pudding wasn’t that great.

Creme Brulee Cake (Php90/slice). In my opinion, this was a very good cake. The toasted sugar on top was thin and crunchy. The cake was soft and newly baked. The egg white frosting in the middle gave it a nice creamy feel.

Over all, I would go to this place for their cakes but not so much for their drinks.

Tea Kitchen
#2 Barasoain St. cor.
Wilson St. San Juan City
>Tel no: 2398103

Craft Coffee Workshop

Located hidden at Broadway Street in Quezon City is a peculiar coffee shop that you’ll instantly fall in love with.

Craft Coffee Workshop is the baby of three fathers: Raymond So, Peter Ong and Sylvester Salmonte. Raymond and Sylvester both shared a dream of opening a coffee shop and then, the idea was translated into a plan and was put into motion. The fact that the coffee shop is a micro roastry and a coffee workshop set them apart from others. They experiment with different blends and mixtures that enhances the flavor of coffee. Aside from this, they use pH (mode of measurement of acidity) regulated water leaning it towards the alkaline side.

The best thing that I love about this place? Their coffee of course! I tried it once and other places just doesn’t seem to be good enough anymore. More about that later as I will relay my experience to you first.

The fragrance of coffee greets you as you enter this shop. There’s nothing like the immediate comfort that you get from inhaling the aroma of coffee after a tiring day.

Here, you won’t find tiny isolated tables. You, instead find huge tables and comfy couches that makes you feel right at home.

I love how Craft’s interiors are all recycled from the carton boxes used to ship in the coffee beans! I also love how they made the place have the feel of a workshop…. well, maybe because it is a workshop after all. They also sell different kinds of coffee machines and brewing products.

Where else can you find a coffee shop that has a bar which faces right into the direction of the preparation of your drink?

I love their clock! Notice the Vodka written at 8! 8am or maybe 8pm? (Sorry for the blurry picture, my hand was very disobedient in being still.)

Meet Elizabeth, their roaster. My curtsy to you oh beautiful machine!

Here, they also provide Jenga blocks! Above is a picture of the start of an epic game played with a friend.

Cafe Latte (Php 160) with Latte Art! Quite a beautiful rose, don’t you say? The latte art is exquisite.

I usually do not add much sugar to coffee since I don’t like it sweet. Here, I didn’t add any sugar at all! The bitterness of the coffee was surprisingly just right. What’s more surprising was that when the coffee cooled down, it was not very acidic. This is a rare thing since coffee usually becomes very acidic after being cooled. (Try to observe this when you drink coffee elsewhere and when you try Craft’s coffee).

Another Latte Art. :) I kinda want to try my hand at latte art. Wonder how it’ll turn out?

I also tried their Clover. (Forgot to take a picture. T.T) I love how it was served in a wine glass. I chose Ethiopia for my Clover. After the coffee cooled down, it gave a sweet flavor to it.

They also sell food at Craft. They have banana bread and waffles (chocolate or cheese). I was told that they’ll add more choices soon. Waffle ala mode? So simple and yet tastes good.

The second floor. I call this, The Coffee Lab: where all the experiments are done.

It was bought from Peking Garden, a part of the Maxim’s Group, and is known across Hong Kong for its Peking Duck.

It came in a box inclusive of the wrap, cucumber, onion leeks and sauce. Admittedly, it was a challenge to reheat it. We had no oven and i just had no idea on how to reheat it. Eventually, I made it fit into the microwave oven which did a good job. The taste and texture would be different of course, but its better than letting the essence of the Pecking duck go to waste.

In the end, it still tasted good. Not delicious but good enough and better than most ducks out there. I was also amused because the cucumber and onion leeks stayed crunchy and slightly fresh. Talk about good packaging!

I apologize for not being able to blog the past weeks since I had my exams. I’m back to blogging until my next exams in late February.

We tried John and Yoko a couple of months ago (Yep! Months. I’m that backlogged. :c ). I was very hesitant to go in because I had a feeling that the food wasn’t going to be that great but my boyfriend insisted that we try it.

Setting foot in the restaurant, you will immediately smell the kitchen. Are there no ventilators in this place? The whole place was dim with hip interiors and a projection movie flashed on the wall. The projection movie interested me since not many restaurant has that. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t have any subtitles nor sounds so I couldn’t understand what was going on. The chairs were unique with pictures of Japanese people on the backs.

Beef Niku Udon (Php 288). This was beef, vegetable, udon and broth thrown in a bowl. The broth was too salty and the udon was overcooked.

Tempura Soba (Php 328). The soba was overcooked again and the broth too salty.

Las Vegas Roll (Php 248). Kani and cucumber topped with scallop and cheese. This tastes okay for me but there wasn’t really anything special. The dish was common and the price doesn’t justify it.

Chicken Teriyaki and Mango Pizza (Php 258). I loved the pairing of chicken teriyaki and mangoes! My only complaint is that there are very few chicken teriyaki and mango pieces which made the pizza feel like it was lacking in something.

The service was somewhat poor. We were entertained very well when we came in but after the food arrived, we had a hard time asking for a glass of water. The floor was sticky. The thing that I hated the most was we smelled when we left.

I learned to go with your gut in picking restaurants. John and Yoko was pricey. The food wasn’t that great. The serving was small. And there’s just something unappetizing about eating in a dim lit restaurant. I’m not going back here.

It’s always scary facing the undefined future but it doesn’t mean that we have to chicken out. Life goes on, time moves on, and we move forward.

Our family always welcomes the New Year with a simple meal (to balance out all the eating that we did last Christmas). Aside from this, we always have Christmas ham sandwiches after watching fireworks. This year, we had hotpot as our last meal.

Forgive the table lined with newspapers/ad newsletters. We just figured that eating hotpot is messy and newspapers just makes it easier to clean.

We mixed half of chicken soup base and half of sate soup base in the pot.

Vermicelli, carrots, lettuce, shitake and enokitake as some of our ingredients.

For the sauces, we used sate paste, Kikoman soy sauce, garlic, onion leeks and green chili.

Dumplings, cheese balls (tofu balls with mozarella cheese inside), pre-packed shabu-shabu mix, rice and beef bulgogi slices. Too bad my favorite hotpot ball (mushroom stuffed tofu ball) was out of stock.

We ate to our heart’s content and then waited for the clock to stike midnight.

Here are some shots of the fireworks that I took. Happy New Year everyone!

This is how we usually spend out New Year’s eve. How about you?

Happy Holidays to all! Cheers!

Banoffee Pie

In our school, the library hosts a Secret Santa fundraiser every year. You can write your wishes at the back of Christmas Gift Tags (which you buy from them) and then hanged on the Christmas tree where people can choose which wishes they want to grant. The library basically acts as a post office wherein you give your wishes and you receive your gifts.

So anyway, someone wished for a banoffee pie and I decided to grant it. This was my first time to make Banoffee Pie from scratch. I wanted to make the crust have a little texture that goes well with the toffee and bananas so I changed the recipe.

Here’s what you need:

♨ Graham Crackers (crumbled)
♨ Oat Crisps (crumbled)
♨ Unsalted Butter (melted)
♨ Heavy Cream (chilled)
♨ Bananas (Sliced)
♨ Condensed Milk
♨ Brown Sugar (Optional)
♨ Chocolate Bar or Chocolate Syrup and/or Caramel Syrup

Mix the crumbled Graham crackers and oat crisps in a bowl and stir in melted butter. Press into the base of a container.

Cover the crust with cling wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour.

To make the toffee, heat the condensed milk and bring the mixture to a boil for a few minutes, stirring continuously until it darkens slightly. You may add brown sugar if your condensed milk’s consistency is too thin. Pour the filling into the crust. Cool and chill again for at least an hour or until firm.

Slice the bananas and place them on top of the caramel. Make sure that the bananas aren’t sliced too thick or too thin.

Whip the cream until it becomes fluffy. Spoon it over the toffee and bananas.

Sprinkle the top of the pie with grated chocolate or chocolate syrup and caramel syrup. Serve chilled.

There you have it! My first Banoffee Pie from scratch! ♥

Octoboy

Last November, I finally got to try Octoboy. I’ve been wanting to try their Takoyaki. Unfortunately, it wasn’t available at the time that we were there.

Octopus Okonomiyaki (Php 285). Okonomiyaki is a Japanese pancake made of vegetables, meat or seafood and batter. The okonomiyaki at Octoboy is really good. It is savory, sweet and salty at the same time. I could finish one order by myself. According to a Japanese friend, its close to the taste of authenticity.

Yakiudon Beef (Php 335). I didn’t like their yakiudon, mostly because of the overpowering taste of the soy sauce. It’s too salty that I couldn’t taste anything except soy sauce.

Although I wasn’t able to taste their Takoyaki when I visited, I was able to taste it when I went to the World Bazaar Festival recently. Their Takoyaki is the best that I’ve had. I’m definitely going back for it.

I’ve heard of Sweet Bella and its wonderful desserts. Ever since then, I’ve always wanted to try it. Luckily, I was given this pretty little thing sometime ago.

This is The Pearl. It is one of the voted best desserts in the Philippines by the Philippine Daily Inquirer in 2007. I actually had to guess what the flavor was when I first took a bite. Eating this cake was like eating a guava. First you get the soft chiffon then you taste the crumbly rough texture of guava and then the gooey center. There are actually something like guava seeds inside too!

I think its really intriguing and skillful to be able to transform a cake into a fruit and not the other way around. I’m looking forward to taste more of their desserts especially their Strawberry Charlotte!

Christmas Giveaway

With Christmas around the corner, I decided to host my first giveaway.

To be honest I was nervous because I had no idea how to pull this off. Eventually, I started to think, plan and act. I am very grateful for my sponsors: Wafu, Super Duck Tea, and Bayani Brew. I wouldn’t be able to do this without them.

If you recall, it was at Wafu that I celebrated my 2nd anniversary with my boyfriend; Super Duck Tea gave me flavors that were unique and that which I crave; and I enjoyed the innovative teas of Bayani Brew when I encountered it at Rockwell’s 2nd Ultimate Taste Test. These were parts of my adventures since I started this blog last April and I want to share it with you through this giveaway.

Here are the prizes: 5 winners will EACH get (1) free drink from the Super Duck Peppermint Series valid until December 31, 2012, (1) free Mifune Rolls for every spend of P1,000 at Wafu valid until February 12, 2013, and (4) bottles of Bayani Brew.

Last week, I went to the opening blowout of Watami Japanese Casual Restaurant at the Mall of Asia. It was packed with people outside waiting to get seated. We made a reservation and then went to the bookstore to wait for the 2 and a half sheet of names before us to disappear. After 2 hours of waiting, it was our turn to be seated.

It was already 9pm when we got seated, we asked the waiter to wipe the table because it was sticky. It was after placing our orders that we realized that they haven’t wiped our table yet, so we asked the waiter to please wipe it clean for us. The same thing happened. We asked the waiter about 4 different times to wipe our table but the sticky table never got wiped clean. We decided to let it slide because we knew that it was the opening of the restaurant and that the volume of orders and requests from customers were overwhelming. The first set of our orders (Scallop, Ribs and Teriyaki Chicken Pizza) and our drinks were then served.

Green Tea Yakult (Php150) and Green Citrus Yuzu Marmalade Soda (Php145).

Pizza Topped with Teriyaki Chicken (Php275). This Japanese pizza was light and flavorful. I wish there was more chicken pieces in the pizza though.

Grilled Scallop with Butter (Php425). The scallop was very fresh and it was cooked perfectly. Not a bit rubbery at all. Make sure to order this when you go here.

Self-Grilled Short Ribs (Php295).

We have already finished the pizza and scallops when we realized we didn’t know how to eat the ribs. Good thing our neighboring table ordered the same thing and made us realize that we have to cook it on a stove that was supposed to be brought to our table 20 minutes ago. At this time, our other orders haven’t arrived yet so we asked for a follow-up and a stove. After about 10 minutes, we asked for a follow-up again explaining that we have been waiting for our orders to come 30 minutes ago. After another 10 minutes, we asked for a follow-up again.

After about 5 requests for a follow-up after, we decided to find the manager and explain our situation. We have waited patiently with understanding but it is time that we said something. The manager was kind enough to ask a waiter to tend to us. We then explained to the said waiter our situation and told him what orders haven’t arrived yet. The waiter promised a follow-up. After 20 minutes, still nothing happened. We found the manager again and explained that we were never tended to. The manager then said that he’ll personally ensure that our remaining orders was brought to our table.

Finally! The stove came! We had the ribs replaced because they had already been out too long and the butter had already melted. We were so hungry that we finished it all in less than 5 minutes. We waited for our remaining orders to come. After about another 10 minutes, we were still waiting for our remaining orders. We found the manager again and he told us that the kitchen was already cooking our orders. At this point, we were already in a hurry to go home because my boyfriend (who still haven’t slept) just came from a 24-hour shift in the hospital and has a shift early the next day. Because our orders were already cooking and we were still hungry, we decided that we would eat fast and rush home.

Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki (Php295). This was my first time trying okonomiyaki and I must say that I really like it.

Tempura Udon (Php325). I’m not sure of the name of the order because they made a mistake with our order. The miso base was clear and the taste was superb. The udon was a bit soggy.

When the order came, we were surprised to find an udon. We ordered the Cold Soba with Tempura (Php275) but they made a mistake and we got udon instead. We informed them of it, the manager apologized and said that it was on the house. We told him to cancel the cold soba and also informed them that the ramen we ordered was still missing.

After a few bites, I realized that I have already lost my appetite. It was already 5 minutes to 11pm and we really have to be on our way. We asked for the bill and asked the manager to cancel the Watami Ramen (Php345) if it still wasn’t made. When the bill came, we saw that the udon didn’t turn out to be “on the house”. We paid anyway because we were in a hurry to leave already.

We ended up with take outs of the left-over food and the ramen that made it in the nick of time.

Over-all, the food was good and the price was affordable for Japanese food. The ambiance was a cozy, casual and comfortable. The service sadly, badly needs improvement. My experience was horrible. What was normally a 40-minute dinner turned into 2 hours, not to mention the constant follow-ups.

I think it’s a waste for a restaurant who serves good food to receive a bad impression because of its service. I don’t know if other customers had the same experience but I hope that their service improves soon. Keep in mind that it was their opening and there is still plenty of time for improvement.

Watami Japanese Casual Restaurant will be opening its 2nd branch at the soon to be opening Glorietta 2 (if I’m not mistaken) this coming December 5, 2012.

Inside the newly opened Robinsons Magnolia is Lombardi’s, an authentic Italian restaurant. I’ve been curious about this place ever since I first saw it at the Orange Place in Pinaglabanan area in San Juan. The only problem is that it is hard to park there because of the sloping road. Good thing they opened in a more convenient location.

The interiors of Lombardi’s gives out a homey vibe which I think is very appropriate for an Italian restaurant. I especially love the chalkboard wall and the lights!

I think their light fixtures are unique. I wonder if it’s made out of recycled materials?

Of course, every table has to have salt, pepper, olive oil and… I’m not quite sure what that is, but I think it’s chili oil. I never did needed extra seasoning on my food so I didn’t get to taste it.

We were served this as we waited for our orders to come.

‘

Pear Juice and Peach Juice (Php120 each).

Mozzarella In Carrozza (Php230). For our antipasta, we ordered melted mozzarella cheese sandwiched between bread slices with tomato sauce and arugula salad.

Ravioli Di Carne (Php480). This is the best Ravioli I’ve tasted so far. It was cooked and seasoned just right.

Prosciutto E’ Funghi (Php345). Their pizza was thin crusted and bountiful yet it wasn’t heavy on the stomach which I like.

Vegetariana (Php310). This vegetarian pizza has zucchini, eggplant, asparagus, bell pepper and basil as toppings.

Here’s a picture of Chef Lombardi checking if everything’s alright in the kitchen. All pizzas are cooked in their brick oven. You don’t see that often these days, the brick oven I mean.

Spaghetti Ai Frutti Di Mare (Php310). Everything was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The only sad part was that there were no clams and mussels that was part of the description in the menu.

Gelato Della Casa (Php120). For dessert, I decided to go with mint ice cream. It tasted like a cross between ice cream and sorbet which is surprisingly refreshing.

Over all, Lombardi’s is one of the better Italian restaurants you can find in the metro. I haven’t been to Italy to taste their food but this is exactly what I imagine it will taste like. I love how everything is well cooked and well seasoned! Too bad I wasn’t able to order the main dishes which I am curious about by the way.

Last long weekend vacation, my sister and I decided to pass by a restaurant that we’ve been eyeing for a long time now. We noticed that the restaurant was packed when we went inside. The place feels homey, appropriate for a family dinner. When we looked at the menu we didn’t know what to order at first but then decided to be vegetarians for a day.

Melitzanosalata (Php 130). Eggplant grilled over charcoal made into a dip. The smoky eggplant flavor combined with the cheese and tomatoes are a great combination.

Salata Horiatiki (Php 380). A Greek salad made of tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, pepper, mint, dill, onions and feta cheese. An overload of tomatoes - yellow ones, cherry ones, giant red ones, etc. all fresh and juicy. The well-dressed salad was very refreshing especially on a hot day.

Watercress Pasta (Php 180, siding). Watercress, tomatoes, spaghetti and creamy sauce all in one. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the watercress was very fresh.

I’ll be going back soon to get some of that Melitzanosalata again and try their lamb.

Greeka Kousina is a place for families and friends, cheers and chats. I’ll definitely be bringing my friends and family there. There’s one challenge though, the parking. They only have parking space enough for around 5-6 cars. The only solution I can think of is to park elsewhere and to carpool going there.

A few months ago, my friends and I bought Antigravity Yoga coupons for half price (originally Php 1,500). We have been wanting to try it out since we heard of it. Anyway, we arrived a few hours before the class and decided to have dinner at My Thai first.

Eating at My Thai made me realize that I don’t eat Thai food as much as I want to. :( Sadly, I was under budget so I couldn’t order more. I just took pictures and had a taste of some of my friend’s food.

Thai Iced Milk Tea (Php 95).

Pad See Ew (Php 190). The noodles were springy and the heat was a good complement to the salty. Too bad the noodles were too salty otherwise it would have been perfect.

Tom Yang Goong (Php 225). I love the soup!

Cream of Squash (Php 98). I wouldn’t recommend you ordering this because you can get better tasting soup elsewhere for a lesser price.

Tonkatsu Burger (Php 205).

Death by Chocolate (Php 150). I find that their cake has less of the chocolate taste and more of the egg-y taste.

Caramel Cake.

Overall, the food is good but not great. You can get better Thai food elsewhere or American food for that matter. The price is also a bit high for the quality of food.

After dinner, we went up to the Yoga studio and played around with the cloth. Antigravity Yoga is a different take on a whole body workout. What’s more fun than hanging inside a cloth right? My favorite pose is the cocoon pose wherein you lie inside the cloth as if you’re in a hammock. It’s very relaxing and serene.

Too bad Antigravity Yoga is expensive (Php 1,000 for a drop-in class) else I’d go as much as I can. If only money grew on trees, right?

Here I am lying inside one of the cloth. :”> I can’t wait for my last lesson! ♥
